Ferries to El Hierro Find the best solution for your ferry trip!

El Hierro is the smallest and least inhabited of the Canary Islands. Located in the southwest of the archipelago, it is also the westernmost point of Spain, and the zero meridian passed through here until 1884.

It has volcanic origins and predominantly mountainous terrain, with 1500m high peaks that descend rapidly to the sea, creating an ecologically diverse landscape with extensive inland forests, rugged coasts that overlook the sea and beautiful natural pools that the sea has formed on the basalt rocks.

In 2000, El Hierro was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, but that's not all: the island is almost completely energy self-sufficient and uses only renewable resources.

Life on El Hierro is different. It is an island to be enjoyed with all five senses, to discover its incredible landscapes and to feel its peace. Come and discover with us this corner of paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean!

🚢 How to get to El Hierro by ferry

To reach El Hierro by ferry, there are departures from Tenerife 6 days a week, on the route from Los Cristianos to Valverde. The only company operating this service is Naviera Armas. The crossing time is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

There are no direct departures from the mainland to El Hierro. It is therefore necessary to make a stopover in Tenerife.  You can get to Santa Cruz de Tenerife from Huelva or Cadiz and then take the ferry to El Hierro.

What to do in El Hierro

  • Explore the coast! If you can't resist diving into the turquoise waters of the ocean you can visit Charco Azul, a cave with a saltwater pool carved into the volcanic cliff. Less impressive, but larger and better equipped, are the natural pools of La Maceta, ideal for relaxing. Another great place to enjoy the sea, especially with children, is the village of Tamaduste, in whose bay terraces of wood and local rock have been built to facilitate access to the sea.

  • Immerse yourself in the sea! The best way to appreciate the wonders of El Hierro's coastline is to dive: there are more than forty dive sites, appreciated by divers from all over the world. The reason why El Hierro is a paradise for underwater exploration is the transparency of its waters and the spectacular volcanic caves on its seabed, which form one of the three Marine Reserves of the Canary Islands.

  • Enjoy the unspoiled nature! If you love hiking and slow walks in the heart of nature, El Hierro will win you over. Some of the routes are steep and suitable for more experienced hikers, but the spectacular views of the sea, alternating with the magical atmosphere of the lush vegetation that covers the island, are well worth the effort!

  • Get a taste of local life! To complete your experience, we recommend a visit to the villages of Valverde (the capital), Frontera and El Pinar to appreciate the typical architecture of black and white stone houses and churches, meet authentic locals and sample local delicacies such as fresh fish and smoked cheeses.
